Imagine your child identifying their emotions effectively, processing them creatively, and expressing them fluently. Envision your child reflecting on the tough stuff with confidence, insight, and strength. Picture a therapeutic space that gives your child energy, support, and focuses on their unique strengths.

Child therapy focuses on supporting your child through play, individual expression, and creativity. Through play-based therapy, your child gets to focus on exploring their inner world, developing a better understanding of themselves, and building confidence. Play is the natural language of children and toys can act as their words. They can learn how to communicate, express their feelings, change behavior, develop coping skills, increase problem-solving skills, and much more.

We use things like toys, music, dance, art, drama, games, video games, and almost any other creative outlet you can imagine. Through this type of “play”, I am able to support your child in developing coping skills, expressing their worries, enhancing their emotional language, and fostering stronger relationships. This is a space for your child to be who they want to be.

What does it look like?

Fun! I focus first on creating a strong relationship with your child, learning about their strengths, hobbies, and unique preferences. This may include us talking about their favorite video games, playing one of their favorite songs, or using puppets to talk in a silly voice. Once the foundation of a strong relationship is built, oftentimes children naturally bring in topics or themes into the session that relate to their inner struggles. Throughout this process, I utilize evidence-based approaches such as EMDR, CBT, mindfulness-based approaches, and more to support children with processing their emotions and reaching towards the goals we have set in their treatment plan. I am in frequent communication with parents and caregivers to provide support and help generalize these new skills.

“We love Kate. That’s not an overstatement or gushing. We legitimately love her for the work that she does with our gang. The kiddos ask “Is Kate coming today?” more days than they don’t. She makes their time together valuable and meaningful and I appreciate her magical work so much.”

What do we work on?

Most of my experience has been working with children who struggle with anxiety, trauma, stress, relationships, social difficulties, are neurodivergent, and/or who have chronic medical conditions. My most common therapeutic goals include helping a child:

  • Develop a positive self-concept
  • Increase emotional awareness and understanding
  • Increase emotional and creative expression
  • Become sensitive and engaged in the process of coping
  • Reduce anxiety
  • Become more self-directing
  • Engage in self-determined decision making
  • Reduce sensitivity to triggering experiences
  • Reducing unhealthy behaviors or coping skills
  • Develop an internal source of evaluation
  • Become more trusting of the self
  • Improve coping skills

What are the logistics?

Our sessions occur on a weekly schedule to support consistency with growth and reduce the likelihood of regression. Individual sessions are $135 per hour.

I work with children ages 8 and up.

At this time I am an out-of-network provider and do not directly accept insurances. However, many insurance plans are able to reimburse you for your out-of-pocket therapy expenses. This means that you are responsible for your up-front therapy expenses at the time of service. I can then provide you with a detailed invoice (called a “superbill”) that you can sent to your insurance provider for possible reimbursement. It may be a good idea to reach out with your insurance company to determine their process in handling out-of-network providers.
